How fixed income anchors our glide path

This paper explores Capital Group‘s approach to fixed income holdings within target date strategies, which seeks to adjust exposure to both the amount and types of bonds held over time via its holdings of underlying strategies. This “glide path within a glide path” approach seeks to build and preserve wealth over a participant’s life.

Key takeaways:

  • The bond funds used in the Series seek to provide diversification from equities, a degree of inflation protection, capital preservation and income, and allocations to these funds vary depending on the stage of life

  • Balanced funds empower underlying fund managers to shift between equities and fixed income in response to market conditions

  • Bond investing can add value to portfolios through duration, yield curve and credit cycle management

Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing.
Although the target date portfolios are managed for investors on a projected retirement date time frame, the allocation strategy does not guarantee that investors' retirement goals will be met. Investment professionals manage the portfolio, moving it from a more growth-oriented strategy to a more income-oriented focus as the target date gets closer. The target date is the year that corresponds roughly to the year in which an investor is assumed to retire and begin taking withdrawals. Investment professionals continue to manage each portfolio for approximately 30 years after it reaches its target date.
